Meeting once a week for two weeks, “Woodcarving 101” is a hands-on introduction to the timeless art of traditional woodcarving. You’ll learn proper chisel form and control, sharpening and tool maintenance, project layout, and how to work confidently with the grain. Beginning with traditional trim-carving techniques, you’ll build the foundational skills needed to create a classical colonial shell carving of your own.
Beginning with foundational trim-carving exercises, you’ll develop the essential techniques needed to carve a classical colonial shell, a design found in some of the finest examples of traditional American furniture and architectural ornament. You’ll gain a greater understanding of proportion, depth, and the steps that transform a flat piece of wood into a beautifully sculpted form.
With limited spots available, you’ll receive plenty of personal instruction and time at the workbench. No experience is necessary, just bring your curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to make some wood chips fly!
Price includes both classes, materials, and your finished project.
Tools are provided, but if you have your own chisels or gouges, feel free to bring them. The instructor will evaluate their suitability and safety for use during the class.
